The recently vacated Temiskaming Shores council seat (Hughes resigned) has been filled by James Paterson.
I heard the list of people that applied and pretty much laughed at the first name. Randy Aulbrook. Council is expected to set policies, such as the city parking policy, which I’m not sure if it’s even finished and in place. Aulbrook seemingly refuses to legally park his vehicle EVERY DAY at Canada Post in New Liskeard. How could he be expected to understand creating laws in our city? I’m glad he didn’t get in. Hopefully he doesn’t run in the next election… or doesn’t get in if he does run.
James Paterson seems like a very nice fellow. I’ve only been in the area for a few years, so I’m still trying to figure out the ‘who’s who’.
As for parking, forgetaboutit! I’ve never seen a police officer out of their vehicle, so it’s not like people are worried about parking tickets (let alone the ultra-dangerous jaywalking that seems to be bred right into the populace).
Now maybe this person had some sort of exemption that Im not aware of, but this weekend I saw a car boldly parked completely up on the sidewalk right in front of Findlay’s pharmacy, by that overhang. Perhaps it’s the owner? Either way… strange, it being the SIDEWALK and all!
There seems to be no law enforcement when it comes to parking, so, its the wild west out there!
Great posts. Keep up the good work
Dear Peeping on Temiskaming
Its been said “those without sin cast the first stone”.
To express ill will towards someone simply for their bad habits is sadning. Much of the same bad habit criticism could be directed at ‘those’ that stand outside their businesses front door EVERYDAY expelling cigarette smoke onto customers and passer bys… but I wouldn’t wish them ill health just because of it..
If the habit really bothers you, may I suggest rather than express ill will towards someone, approach them about it, rather than cast the stone.
That’s funny ‘Except Weekends’. Who was expressing ill will? For one thing, parking illegally isn’t a bad habit, it is breaking the law. Parking isn’t allowed everywhere for many reasons, such as interfering with traffic flow, pedestrians or emergency vehicles. A bad habit is chewing your nails or smoking. Blowing that smoke in the way of other people goes beyond a habit and is just insensitive. Soon it may also be against the law to smoke in the entryways of businesses.
Saying that someone should approach others breaking the law is a good way to get someone injured, potentially very badly. These days we have far more violent crime, mentally unstable and inconsiderate people. All too often we are hearing of vicious assaults, resulting from simple things like ‘he looked at me the wrong way’ or he cut me off in traffic’. This type of thing is left for police to enforce… if they can ever be found. They seem to be around when all is well, but where are they when someone runs a red light and nearly kills a pedestrian?
Hey Meh,
James Paterson does seem like a nice fellow. I don’t know him, but he seems to be involved a great deal in cancer fundraising, in the name of his late friend Shanna Larsen. I’ve heard he often still acts like he’s 15 though. Can you fault someone for that though? I’d love to be a teenager again.
Parking is a joke in the city of Temiskaning Shores though… but I think it is because there’s a total lack of enforcement. No one is allowed to park on a sidewalk, except of course an emergency vehicle that might be trying to block off an area anyway.
That same area concerns me from time to time also, as I’ve almost been hit a couple times by someone taking a shortcut across the parking lot in front of Rona, while I was turning in to the Chartrand’s parking lot from the lights, like we are supposed to do. These vehicles swing off the road and shoot across the parking lot, ignoring line markings completely, sometimes running straight across to Scott St behind Chartrands. The city needs to replace the old sloped curb (from before the lights were there) and replace with a normal curb that will prevent this. Of course, when they cut in, they’re also endangering pedestrians as the vehicle jumps the sidewalk and speeds through a parking lot. This is a safety concern.
I agree. That parking lot between Warring’s and Rona is a death trap! I know what you mean about the curb. Heh.. You’re gonna need a whole new blog for parking/traffic alone!
